Yesterday was marked by the first big Tsunami “scare” in quite some time here on the island. Here are a few images captured while I was attempting to document the potential tsunami.
Also, for those of you (yeah…like anyone is reading this anyway..) not familiar with the sirens which signal a tsunami warning may be interested to listen to the sound recording I made. People always say they are “eerie” or “creepy”. Personally, it makes me feel as though I am in an episode of ‘Lost’ (you know…when the white flashes happen…or something…I definitely didn’t get sucked into the show and have never seen it in my life).

It turned out to be a non-event (except for some tidal recession / advance), which is of course a good thing, but not very exciting at the same time. The supermarkets made out like bandits, the gas companies too… and the network ratings went through the roof no doubt. So disaster capitalism had a good day at the beach.
All boats were advised to get offshore, and though this single photo doesn’t do it justice, it was like a massive regatta out there stretched for miles across the (nearshore) horizon.
The coast guard made a few passes and ordered (advised) surfers out of the water.
Some people were too stoked on having Saturday mid-morning Diamond Head all to themselves to be worried about a little (potential) tsunami.
Why is there always some dude who thinks playing a guitar in any situation is “cool”. I can’t stand these pseudo-hippy wankers, who are so flaky and “alternative” that they think playing chords (not songs) on a beach minutes before a tsunami is forecast to arrive will garner them “universe” points or something. *SIGH*
Tsunami picnic? Apparently.
Although the Diamond Head monument was closed, people still scaled the crater from all sides for an overhead vantage point – amazing what it takes to get people to become active…

“pseudo-hippy wankers… ha ha ha
